General:
BAE Hawk Mk.51
The Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom began looking for a successor to the Folland Gnat Trainer jet trainer in the mid-1960s. The RAF Central Flying School indicated a need for a medium-sized single-engined aircraft with a speed of Mach 0.85. Both BAC and Hawker Siddeley submitted designs, and the Hawker Siddeley HS 1182AJ was selected on 1 October 1971. A follow-up order for 176 aircraft was placed on 21 March 1972. The first prototype flew on 21 August 1974. The first production aircraft were delivered to the RAF in April 1976. The Finnish Air Force began looking in the mid-1970s for a replacement for the Fouga CM 170 Magister. Of five options, the Hawk was test-flown already in October 1975. The Hawk was chosen for its good performance and handling. The Council of State authorised negotiations for the purchase of 50 aircraft on 3 November 1976 and the final order decision was made on 29 December 1977. Four of the aircraft were assembled in the UK and the remaining 46 at Valmet’s Kuorevesi factory. The first two aircraft were handed over to the Air Force on 19 December 1980, the next two on 23 July 1981 and the Valmet-assembled aircraft between 1981–1985. Seven Mk.51A aircraft were ordered in 1990 and 18 Mk.66 aircraft were bought from Switzerland in 2007.
HW-315 first flight 6 May 1982 and removed from service on 26 April 2011 with 5014 h 55 min.
