General:
BAE Hawk Mk.51
The Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom began seeking a successor to the Folland Gnat Trainer in the mid-1960s. The RAF Central Flying School required a medium-sized single-engine aircraft with a speed of Mach 0.85. Both BAC and Hawker Siddeley submitted designs; Hawker Siddeley's HS 1182AJ was selected on 1 October 1971. This was followed by an order for 176 aircraft on 21 March 1972. The first prototype made its maiden flight on 21 August 1974. The first production aircraft were delivered to the RAF in April 1976. The Finnish Air Force began searching in the mid-1970s for a replacement for the Fouga CM 170 Magister. Of five options, the Hawk was flight-tested in October 1975. The Hawk was chosen for its good performance and handling. The Council of State authorised negotiations for 50 aircraft on 3 November 1976 and the final order decision was made on 29 December 1977. Four aircraft were assembled in the UK and the remaining 46 at Valmet's Kuorevesi factory. The first two were delivered to the Air Force on 19 December 1980, the next two on 23 July 1981 and the Valmet-assembled aircraft between 1981 and 1985. Seven Mk.51A aircraft were ordered in 1990 and 18 Mk.66 aircraft were purchased from Switzerland in 2007.
HW-328 first flew on 10 October 1983 and was withdrawn from flying service on 15 May 2013 with 4,768 h 36 min.
