General:
BAE Hawk Mk.51
The Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom began seeking a successor to the Folland Gnat Trainer in the mid-1960s. The RAF Central Flying School stated a need for a medium-sized single‑engine aircraft with a speed of Mach 0.85. Both BAC and Hawker Siddeley submitted proposals, and Hawker Siddeley’s HS 1182AJ was selected on 1 October 1971. The selection was followed by an order for 176 aircraft on 21 March 1972. The first pre‑series aircraft made its maiden flight on 21 August 1974. The first production aircraft were delivered to the Royal Air Force in April 1976. The Finnish Air Force began looking in the mid‑1970s for a replacement for the Fouga CM 170 Magister. Of five options, the Hawk was already flown for trials in October 1975. The Hawk was chosen for its good performance and flight characteristics. The Council of State authorised negotiations for the purchase of 50 aircraft on 3 November 1976 and the final order decision was made on 29 December 1977. Four of the aircraft were assembled in the UK and the remaining 46 at Valmet’s Kuorevesi factory. The first two were delivered to the Air Force on 19 December 1980, the next two on 23 July 1981 and the Valmet‑assembled aircraft in 1981–1985. In 1990 seven Mk.51A aircraft were ordered and in 2007 eighteen Mk.66 aircraft were purchased from Switzerland.
HW-318 first flew on 13 September 1982 and was withdrawn from flying service on 28 August 2012 with 5,016 h 8 min.
