Meriläinen School, village school building, Halsua, Halsua

This is a former village school building and an outbuilding, solidly constructed of stout logs, located near Halsua church village on properties 74-402-4-61 and 74-402-4-59.

After its use as a school, the building served in the 2010s as accommodation for seasonal workers.

The floor plan shows the use of space. Main rooms are an entrance hall, kitchen, staff room and two classrooms, plus sanitary/changing facilities. In addition, at the east end on the upper floor there is a separate studio flat with direct access from outside via stairs beside the eastern main door. Beside the school there is a grass sports field which has continued to be used by Halsua municipality as a local sports venue.

The area is covered by the Halsua local plan, where school properties are marked YO II with the additional designation sr-2. According to the plan description, this is a “building of architectural, cultural-historical or landscape value.”

“The building may not be demolished without a demolition permit under Section 127 of the Land Use and Building Act (MRL). Repair and alteration works and any infill development must be planned and executed so that its architectural, cultural-historical and landscape significance is preserved. Changes affecting the character or exterior appearance of the building require a statement from the museum authority.”

The building has oil-fired central water heating. The windows have been replaced and are in good condition. The heating system is not currently functioning and there are local freeze damages in the pipework which have caused leaks to the interior and the intermediate floor. The roof has damage around penetrations. The property is sold as a renovation project and the seller does not accept liability for the condition of the building.

In the staff room there is a fibre-optic network hub owned by KaseNet Oy; the buyer must agree the hub’s operation with the fibre company.
