Renault 5 GT Turbo race car

One-owner vehicle. Purchased in autumn 1988.

The car was completely standard from the factory and was built into a Group N race car during the winter of 1988–1989. We received good build instructions from Renault Sport, and almost all parts required for racing were obtained through them.

The car was completely disassembled, and the body was reinforced by welding according to the instructions received. All modifications permitted under the Group N regulations were made to the engine. An asphalt rally suspension designed for competition use was purchased from Renault Sport.

The car competed in the Finnish Circuit Racing Championship in 1989 and 1990. In 1989, it won the Finnish Championship. In 1990, it finished second in the series, with the same number of points as the championship-winning car.

After this, the car was driven occasionally in some competitions and was also used at a few PR events. Later, it was modified to match the 5 GTE model (1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine) and was driven in a few endurance races.

Restoration began in 2016. The entire car was thoroughly inspected and returned to its 1990 specification. (The roll cage has naturally been modified to meet current requirements.) The work was carried out by the same person who originally built the car as a race car and has been responsible for its maintenance throughout its history.

The restoration was completed in summer 2019. The car was registered as a historic racing car, and a FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP), form number FIN6260, was obtained.

The car is in good condition and the body is completely rust-free. It has not been significantly damaged in any accident. Only the front wing has been replaced due to a minor dent.

The car was repainted around 2000 because the original paint had faded slightly and some scratches and wear had appeared during storage.

The car can be made considerably more comfortable to drive on public roads by changing the springs and seats.

The racing seats and seat belts are old, so they must be replaced if the car is to be used in official competitions.
