Subaru Outback yr.2005, two sets of tyres on alloy wheels + nearly a tank of petrol

For sale: winter tyres in good condition, summer tyres in fair condition, nearly a tank of petrol and a Subaru Outback, year 2005, as transport for them.

Originally imported from the United States. The dash shows miles, temperature in Fahrenheit and volumes in gallons. Foreign registration AD0497.

I have driven it about 8,000 km over the last winter. Current odometer reading 428,736 km; it is driven almost daily so the figure will increase.

The engine block heater is fitted but didn’t seem to warm much. There were no starting problems — one of the best cold starters I’ve had.

Heating works well. This was made at a time when some energy was left for the cabin instead of being fully transferred to the drivetrain. The air conditioning has been tested in recent days and seems to cool.

The head unit is a Livia. It’s selective about which stations it will play, but the ones it likes sound decent. Bluetooth pairs with phones; I haven’t tried a USB stick.

The engine warning light has been flashing intermittently or, at times, stays on continuously. A fault reader gave code P0851, which refers to a circuit fault in the shift control circuit.

The fault light and cruise control are linked: when the light flashes the cruise works fine; when it stays on continuously the cruise disengages.

Sometimes the cruise will hold for a couple of hundred kilometres, other times only a few kilometres.

The automatic gearbox shifts quite smoothly when warm and, with cruise engaged, holds speed within a couple of kilometres per hour. When cold, especially in severe frost, it used to jerk on changes until it warmed up.

Occasionally it smokes when cold. In winter there were times of noticeable smoke on start-up and then none. It does consume oil reasonably, but not to the extent of some recent VAG engines.

Cosmetically it’s fair, not new. It’s an adult even by American standards. Bumpers show small kiss marks. Heated windscreen is intact and not badly worn. Seals are frayed here and there, especially around the tailgate, so there are some wind noises. Driver’s seat has a small tear at the side but the interior is otherwise fairly tidy. No recent smoking and no animals transported.

It has real four-wheel drive, which works. It has been driven in single-season snow (not deep powder) provided the underbody doesn’t sink in.

On the road it will run long stretches straight without constant steering corrections if you find a reasonably straight section.

Two sets of tyres on alloy wheels. Winter tyres have around 8 mm of tread all round; the summer tyres are close to the legal limit and will need replacement sooner rather than later. The summer tyres are on Subaru’s original alloy wheels in reasonable condition. The winter wheels are rather tatty WSL alloys; tyres are 2× Bridgestone and 2× Nordman.

A previous owner has glued the passenger-side headlamp bulb holder and it is misaligned — needs attention.

The service book and the boot cover have been taken by a previous owner for their projects.

I changed the engine oil and filter at about 420,700 km (odometer 261,422 miles). The differential oils were changed at about 423,300 km (odometer 263,012 miles); I have a copy of the receipt for the latter.

There are two keys: the main key and a separate mechanical key. There are also two remote fobs; one works, the other does not. I have not investigated the fault.

There may be other issues I haven’t noticed or cannot recall.
