This ready-to-use freezing toilet needs no water connection, sewer or extra ventilation. Just plug it into a wall socket. The oval 21-litre inner container fits a biodegradable bag that can be removed hygienically for composting.

The Ekohytte Frost freezing toilet has been designed with particular attention to energy economy. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make the unit extremely energy-efficient. Ekohytte Frost consumption is only 0.36 kWh/24 h, i.e. about half the consumption of comparable competing products. The thick base insulation and tall adjustable feet mean the freezing toilet should be installed in a heated indoor space.

Before first use

• After removing the product from its packaging, check it for any damage. Contact the seller if you notice any damage.

• Leave the unit upright for at least half an hour. Any oil that may have entered the refrigeration circuit during transport will then settle back into the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Adjust them before use so the toilet sits firmly and level.

• The seat is intended for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything there that will not compost, e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
The toilet should be placed indoors in a heated space. It can be used on underfloor-heated floors thanks to the thick base insulation and tall feet. Heat increases power consumption, so we do not recommend placing it immediately next to a heater or other heat source. The optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Place the toilet horizontally and secure it with the adjustable feet.

Use

• Push the biodegradable bag into the bottom of the container and fold its edges over the container rim so the container can be lowered into the seat.

• Make sure the bucket handle is inside so the seat ring and lid close properly.

• Plug the unit in and switch the toilet on at the power switch so the green indicator lights.

• Wait about one hour before first use.

Emptying

• When the bucket is about two-thirds full, the biodegradable bag should be changed.

• Fold the top edges of the bag into the container and lift the container out of the seat.

• Compost the waste in a household or garden composter to which you have added plenty of dry material before emptying the waste.

• Tear the surface of the bag, e.g. with a garden fork, and cover with a layer of dry material.

• Check for ice build-up around the container bowl. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

• Fit a new bag in place.

Use of drying material
Drying material is not required in a freezing toilet. Drying material should only be added for secondary composting.

Cleaning
Clean Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use all common household cleaners. The container can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry it before replacing. Do not use water when cleaning the rear refrigeration chamber wall. Clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods of non-use

• Unplug the unit

• Empty, clean and dry the container and the cold chamber

• Leave the lid open

• The unit can be stored in an unheated space
