Heinola is relinquishing an old school building with its plot on Vierumäenkatu in Tommola. The school building for sale by auction at Vierumäenkatu 10 was originally built as Tommola School in the late 1940s; the building plans and permit were approved in 1947.

The building has an area of 530 m² and the plot measures 2,473 m².

There remains unused building rights of just under 500 m² on the plot. In the local plan the plot is zoned AL-45, i.e. for residential, commercial and office buildings.

The building is in fair condition and was repaired in the 1980s and in 2005. The building and the entire property are sold as seen.

The building is single-storey with a large basement at one end. The foundations and base walls are concrete. The ground floor structure is mainly a slab-on-ground concrete floor and partly a slab-on-ground concrete floor topped with an insulated timber floor structure.

The ground-floor external walls are timber-framed, insulated with wood chips and mineral wool. The facade is rendered. The roof covering is tiles and heating is district heating with water-filled radiators. Ventilation is mechanical supply and extract / mechanical extract.

The building has been maintained and repaired over the years, for example the domestic water and sewage pipes, heating, ventilation and electrics. The roof covering was renewed in the 2000s. The building was used by Työpaja Torppa until 2021 and has since been in partial use.

The domestic arts school’s eventful history

The former domestic arts school had long traditions in East Häme, with teaching starting already in 1892 in Sysmä. Initially it operated as a travelling women's crafts school before settling in Heinola. After operating first in the old Rullatehdas the school moved into premises built in the 1950s.

The building now for sale was modernised in 1981–82. The alterations were designed in 1980 by Heinola's then architect Unto Tupala. The works were carried out to meet the growing needs of the Heinola domestic arts school as upper-secondary education was reformed.

Teaching developed and flourished in Heinola: the school later became an artisans' training Handicraft and Applied Arts Institute and later the Heinola Institute. Competition for upper-secondary school places in Päijät-Häme eventually led to the closure of the historic school.
