A handsome four-wheel-drive S80 acquired in part exchange, with a smoothly working automatic gearbox and a proper Volvo D5 185 hp engine.

In tidy condition for its age, although it naturally has some signs of use.

Passed its MOT with a clean report in July, so almost a year of validity remains.

Working air conditioning, tow bar, four electric windows, heated seats, engine block heater, leather interior, driver's seat with memory, xenon lights and ISOFIX.

Drawbacks: The front anti-roll bar link knocks over bumps; only the tyres currently fitted are included, and they are serviceable 19-inch tyres on smart alloy wheels; the service book is "missing", and the previous owner has promised to deliver it, but this cannot be guaranteed. According to the service information, the timing belt was changed at 375,000 km; I checked the belt and it still looked quite good. The windscreen has many stone chips and a small crack right at the bottom, outside the field of vision. The power steering is stiff at idle; it works well with a little throttle. The screen-wash reservoir leaks, and the car displays a warning about a headlamp fault, which appeared after I fitted a Biltema xenon bulb; the lights nevertheless work normally. All of these issues have been reflected in the price.

The lack of power assistance at idle has been traced to the power-steering pump; an original-quality, lightly used one from a breaker costs €100–150...

A brand-new passenger-compartment blower motor has just been fitted!

Overall, however, this is a functional car; the four-wheel drive works very well and the engine has plenty of torque.

The engine does not leak, use oil or coolant, or produce smoke.
