BMW 540, 1999, Mikkeli

For sale is a very tidy and rare BMW E39, 540i M Sport manual.

Imported to Finland in 2004. It has been with the same owner ever since. It has now stood in a cold storage for the past couple of years due to the owner's illness.

The car was rustproofed by a professional fairly soon after arriving in Finland in 2005. The engine oil has been changed regularly, at most every year/10,000 km. Otherwise it has been "an old man's pride and joy".

The car has been modified and registered to run on ethanol-based fuel. It has an eFlexFuel e85 conversion kit. So it can be driven on regular petrol or e85 ethanol, or any blend of the two.

The car has been put back on the road and inspected in July this year.

At that time, a lot of maintenance was carried out:

Engine oil + filter (Total 5w40 / Mann-Filter)

Cabin air filters (Mann-Filter)

Spark plugs (NGK)

Engine air filter (Mann-Filter) (A free-flow filter suitable for the original filter box is also included)

Fuel filter

Brake fluid

Bonnet release cable

Rust repair on the sill jacking points by a professional

Gearbox oil (Febi-Bilstein MTF LT-2)

Final drive oil (Castrol 75w140)

Pros:

- 6-speed manual and petrol V8

- Relatively low mileage

- Good equipment, xenon lights, cruise control, the best DPS HiFi package with subwoofer, etc.

- Good condition leather interior

- Factory M Sport interior and exterior package

- 19" Breyton alloy wheels + 17" original wheels with winter tyres.

- Dual exhausts, centre silencer removed (good sound)

Cons:

- Valve cover gaskets are leaking oil; when replacing these, it would probably be a good idea to have the timing chain checked by a specialist as well. No information is available on whether anything has been done to the chains.

- The ABS light came on after a few hundred km of driving. Previously it only caused a slight pulsing in the pedal during low-speed braking. A scraping noise had been heard from the right-hand wheel, and the noise stopped when the light came on. Suspected dirt in the magnetic ring, now affecting the ABS sensor. I have not yet had time to investigate further, as I do not have a suitable tester.

- The usual pixel fault in the LCD displays

- Parking sensors do not work

- The rear window sun blind does not move electrically

- The auxiliary belts should be replaced

- It warns of a blown brake light bulb; likely a contact issue in the left light, although the light does work

- Rust at the lower edges of the front doors and around the tailgate release handle

- The steering pulls slightly to one side; a four-wheel alignment would be advisable
