Centuries of history and the atmosphere of a cultural home

In the historic surroundings of Mustio Ironworks stands Rosenhagen, a log-constructed house. The house is built solidly on bedrock. According to oral tradition, its massive logs were once brought from Hanko and the building has stood in its place since the 19th century. The exact year of construction is not known.

Originally built as accommodation for the staff of Mustio Manor, Rosenhagen consisted of four separate apartments (room and kitchen). When the Manor left the Linder family in 1941, this house also changed ownership and later became the property of the town of Karjaa. During municipal ownership it served, among other things, as a “home for the elderly”.

For the last decades the house has been the family home and creative workspace of visual artist Dr Katja Juhola and musician Jukka Juhola since 1994. Rosenhagen has hosted many large summer events and gatherings. The house has been full of joy and life.

Over the years the building has been gradually stripped of layers from a 1970s renovation: by removing partition walls the apartments were turned into a home suitable for a single family. At the same time old plank floors and log walls were revealed, and newspapers from the 19th century can still be found under the wall coverings.

The house currently has six rooms, a kitchen and two separate bathrooms, one of which has an electric sauna. The layout can easily be divided so part of the house can be used for rental or as a workspace alongside private living.

The attic is currently an open, high, undeveloped space offering significant potential for additional floor area.

Rosenhagen is an old log building. The house is habitable and ready to move into as it stands, but it requires the usual monitoring and repairs typical of an older wooden house. A thorough condition survey will be carried out with the buyer. All known repair needs will be shown at the viewing.

The large 3,776 m2 plot offers space for gardening and outdoor living. A small arboretum has been established in the yard with approx. 60 different trees and shrubs, many of which are uncommon in our area.

The house is only a few hundred metres from the magnificent Mustio Manor, its park, the Inn (Linnankrouvi), hotel and summer theatre. The same distance leads to the United Gypsies brewery taproom, open from spring to autumn with regular live music and art exhibitions — and excellent pizzas. A child-friendly municipal beach is only a few hundred metres further. There are many swimming spots within walking or cycling distance. The Bruksträsket lake (part of Lake Lohja) is also only a few hundred metres away and offers fine boating routes to places such as Karjalohja and Lohja. Three kilometres away is the IK Trissan ski centre Oxberget with disc golf courses, shelters and running tracks. Numerous forests with lakes, nature reserves and groves offer excellent hiking opportunities. There are plentiful spots for fishing, berry-picking and mushrooming. The sea shore at Inkoo is only 20 km away.

Karjaa is the nearest town at 18 km and has a railway station. Lohja is 23 km away. Both towns provide normal municipal services. Helsinki city centre is 75 km away and the airport can be reached in about an hour by car.

Mustio village centre is under 4 km away and has, among other services, a bilingual primary school, kindergarten, library, K-Market, post office, Matkahuolto and an antique shop. Buses run to Karjaa, Lohja and Helsinki.
