Whether the mosquitoes are absent because of the large beaver population reportedly the biggest in Finland or for some other reason, I don’t know. Either way, in the past five years mosquitoes have appeared no more often than you can count on one hand.
In southern Satakunta, near the borders of Varsinais-Suomi and Pirkanmaa, lies the village of Kukonharja in Huittinen. The village is small but has everything needed for a good cottage holiday: a village hall, a summer kiosk, a playground, a dredged riverside swimming spot, a football pitch, the Saunakoski outdoor stage and almost a herd of alpacas. All of this is within walking distance of the cottage. The nearest grocery shop is in Vampula (a small K‑Market, about 10 km) and you can drive to the Huittinen ABC in a quarter of an hour. Huittinen town centre offers comprehensive services; special praise for the selection at K‑Supermarket.
The cottage is a log‑framed, board‑clad house of about 55 m², built in 1944, on a stone foundation. The cottage includes an open plan kitchen/living room, a bedroom, a porch, a composting toilet and a terrace. The attic can be smartly renovated into additional rooms. The plot is a sloping plot of 1,054 m² and borders the Alainenjoki river. Beavers live in the river and trees regularly fall on the opposite bank. These engineers of nature have caused no harm; on the contrary, trying to spot beavers is entertaining and the felled trees land neatly against the ground or across the river. Some of this wood has been used as sauna wood for the private yard sauna. Only wildlife uses the opposite bank, as there is planted forest between the fields and the river.
The sauna is a Pihla sauna package, completed in 1999. In addition to the steam room, the sauna building has a changing room and a terrace. The sauna building is about 10 m².
In addition to the cottage and sauna, there is an old storage building on the plot that once served as the plot’s sauna.
From the cottage’s history we know it originally served as the home of a small family. The roof once leaked and traces remain in the bedroom’s intermediate ceiling. The outer roof has since been renewed by previous owners and no further leaks have been observed. A chimney cap has also been installed.
If you are not looking for modern glamour and you appreciate the old, this could be a peaceful retreat for your soul.
The cottage has had the following work done
electrical panel renewed (by a previous owner)
roof and chimney cap renewed (by a previous owner)
2021: new electrical connection and all cottage wiring renewed
2021: Mitsubishi air‑to‑air heat pump purchased and installed in the bedroom; heats and cools, with optional Wi‑Fi remote control
since 2021 the cottage has had maintenance heating year‑round; earlier it was left cold and some shrinkage marks remained in a few logs, now removed with regular heating
sauna: new sauna stones, lowered benches and installation of a water tank
removed old lining, wind‑protection boards, many wallpapers and hundreds of nails from the living room to reveal the logs
installed a small kitchen; appliances include a fridge, coffee maker, kettle, portable electric hobs and a microwave
acquired three oil‑filled portable radiators
renewed the living room intermediate ceiling and opened the floor, repaired the base where necessary and installed new floorboards (skirting boards still missing)
installed a composting toilet in half of the porch
renewed the porch and terrace floor structure and boards, and replaced the terrace railings and roof supports
reinforced the yard with gravel, created walkways and a parking area; geotextile under the gravel at the parking area
chimney swept most recently in 2024; the sweeper found no reason not to use the bake oven, but could not check the roof from above (we have heated the bake oven every year), the living room stove requires refurbishment before use
furnished throughout: the bedroom has a double bed, a pull‑out wooden sofa and a very old heavy wardrobe. The living room contains kitchen cabinets, a four‑seater dining table, a modern flat‑screen TV on a stand (an older spare TV is on the floor and can be moved to the bedroom if wished), a large corner sofa that opens into two separate good beds on the right side, with storage under the left‑side and corner cushions and also inside the footstool; the terrace is furnished with cushions, the sauna terrace has a wooden sofa and chair, and the changing room has two baden‑baden chairs and a table
basic household items for essential needs; kitchen and sauna are equipped with utensils
Continue the renovation or use the cottage as is. NOTE! Items not listed as renewed are original or renewed much earlier. For us the cottage was meant to be exactly like this.
The plot has an outside water tap with potable, apparently municipal, water. Connection details were not investigated; according to the previous owner a connection exists. The neighbourhood includes cottages, permanent homes and nearby farms. No neighbour is immediately adjacent and the yard side is sheltered. Google shows the exact location; the address is Kukonharjantie 790, Huittinen.
The seller will pay the 2026 property tax, which is €107.75 per year.
So you can start cottage life immediately after paying the purchase price! Just bring food, change of clothes, bedding and towels and the cottage dream can begin. You can use the cottage year‑round if you bring drinking water during freezes, though very cold‑temperature cottageing requires a degree of outdoor spirit ;-)
All bids are binding. The seller will send all documents and receipts in their possession to the buyer by registered post, or they can be collected from Tervakoski or Hyvinkää or handed over at the closing.
The property can be viewed before the auction on Thursday 6 August 2026 between 13:00–15:00 or 18:00–19:00. Viewings take place only if registered in advance by 5 Aug 2026. Self‑guided visits to the plot, sauna and storage are possible at other times by prior arrangement.
