The Municipality of Pälkäne is looking for a new development‑minded owner for its former Harhala village school through a two‑stage auction procedure.
The unique, nearly 7,921 m² property is in a prominent location at the junction of Lahdentie and Valkeakoskentie. The former Harhala school is an imposing stone building completed in 1930, showing features of 1920s classicism, such as a symmetrical façade, corner pilasters and lunette windows in the gables. The manor‑like yard also includes an adaptable outbuilding and a root cellar. The surrounding area has detached housing, an outdoor sports field and the property still hosts original noble tree stock from an early‑20th‑century nursery.
A local detailed plan has been prepared for the area: the site is zoned for public buildings, as well as residential, commercial and office buildings (YAL‑1). This and an additional 1,400 m² building right provide wide possibilities for diverse development. The main school building is protected by the local plan (sr‑1) and may not be demolished.
School activities at Harhala ended in autumn 2020. In winter 2020 the main building suffered water damage when water leaked from an upstairs WC through the intermediate floor into a classroom below.
