Ford Mustang SVO Turbo hatchback/2550, 1984, Turku

Notes SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) was a limited-production (9,844 units) special Mustang model built from 1984 to 1986. The main design goal was to offer a genuinely usable competitor to imported sports cars and serve as a homologation model for production-based circuit racing. “Boss 302 of the ’80s.” The chassis differs substantially from the GT Mustang, and the body and interior feature many unique parts. Power comes from the durable, turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-litre Lima inline-four (175 hp in 1984), with electronic EEC-IV engine management. Borg-Warner T5 gearbox with Hurst shifter, 7.5-inch limited-slip rear axle with traction bars, four-wheel disc brakes, five-lug hubs, adjustable Koni dampers and 16-inch wheels. Exterior features include an aerodynamic front valance, functional intercooler scoop and two-level rear spoiler.
This example is in good original condition, has covered 98,000 miles and is registered as a historic vehicle. I imported the car from the USA for myself in 2014 and have gradually gone through it, driving approximately 23,000 miles myself. There is no rust, and all surfaces have been cosmetically refurbished over the years (2015–2020). The paint and lights were professionally polished; almost all parts underneath, in the wheel arches and in the engine bay were removed and cleaned, with wear items replaced at the same time. The wheels were polished. The interior was cleaned, the driver’s seat refurbished by an upholsterer, and the dashboard panels re-flocked in the original shade. All of the SVO’s unique and valuable parts (including indicators, steering wheel, gear-knob, intercooler, seats, lower control arms, sill air deflectors, front valance, rear spoiler and newly replaced front Koni dampers) are intact and in good condition.

The car has an interesting history. It is one of the very first SVO Mustangs built, from October 1983, and was sold new to Chrysler for testing and research. This is confirmed by the seller who sold the car new, in an email exchange. There is extensive original documentation and related material, including the window sticker, warranty card, manuals, Marti Report, sales brochures and the factory Shop Manual. The car is tidy but not new; it is not a show car, although it has appeared at a few shows. Forty-one years are subtly visible in the body and paint, as the car has not been restored. It was partially repainted long ago, probably after the Chrysler testing period. The interior is hardly showing its age. The engine and gearbox have never been opened, the performance is intact and the turbocharger works. Regularly serviced, with many parts replaced and documentation available. It leaves a small oil mark. The differential was rebuilt by a professional (JM Garage). Almost new tyres. All equipment works, including the air conditioning. Eibach lowering springs are fitted, but the originals are included. Many parts included. MOT-tested in 2024; next test due in 2028.

A rare opportunity if this is what you are looking for. There may not be another in Finland, and based on my own research there are approximately five in Europe. The car can be inspected in a storage facility in Turku by appointment.
