For repair, a recently inspected BMW 318i from 12/2008 with low mileage is being sold. The car has had the timing system repaired and has also been well maintained over the years. A good project for someone handy, as the car was in good condition before the expected timing failure.

Defects and other observations

After the timing system repair (158,000 km), it was driven about 1,000 km, and despite normal driving the car stalled at traffic lights. It would not start, and when turning the crankshaft it turns one way for a full revolution and then the other way for a revolution before jamming. The timing may have skipped and the piston is now contacting the valves, so the timing chain tensioner may have failed. There is a little metal in the oil filter, but it is not full of metal (see picture). The assumption is that the connecting rod bearings are intact. Oil and coolant are in the engine. No warning lights appeared on the dashboard and there were no unusual noises before the engine seized. When the fault occurred, the car was left at the roadside and towed to the workshop. No attempt was made to force it to start unnecessarily.
