On test drive, we observed the following:

• The timing chain has just been replaced and the damaged cam gears renewed. After the service, a camshaft timing fault was still reported. No receipts for the repair. Test drive was ok - minor hesitation. However, collection by trailer or towing is recommended.

  
  

• The car has now been inspected by us, and below is a summary of the observations made:

  The following fault codes were read from the engine control unit (ECU):
  130104 – Intake-side VANOS solenoid valve: camshaft adjustment sticking.
  130308 – Exhaust-side VANOS solenoid valve: requested position not reached.
  130E20 – Plausibility / synchronisation out of range between the intake camshaft and crankshaft.
  120408 – Turbocharger boost pressure control disabled as a result of system response.Diagnosis:
  The operation of the VANOS system was checked with a guided test based on the faults. The intake-side VANOS solenoid valve moves the intake camshaft mostly correctly, but in certain positions the adjustment deviates from the permitted range in both plus and minus directions.
  
  The exhaust-side VANOS solenoid valve, on the other hand, does not move the exhaust camshaft at all. Since the engine also has a fault code related to synchronisation between the crankshaft and camshaft, it is likely that the timing chain timing is incorrect or the timing chain is installed incorrectly. Another possible fault is a defective exhaust-side VANOS solenoid valve, which means the exhaust camshaft cannot be adjusted.
  
  An oil leak is visible at the rear of the engine, in the area of the VANOS units. The VANOS system components are located in the cylinder head cover, and the oil is likely leaking through the VANOS solenoid valve seals. In addition, an oil leak is observed around the oil filter housing mounting area.
  
  These oil leaks are known issues in BMW's B38 engine.
  
  The B38 engine is also known to have a coolant leak related to the turbocharger, where coolant may leak through the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold side. In this design, the turbocharger and exhaust manifold form a single unit and cannot be separated.
  
  In addition, the B38 engine is known to have issues with the oil pump and vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is connected to the oil pump, and dirty or poor-quality engine oil can damage the vacuum pump. In the worst case, the damage can also lead to failure of the oil pump.
  Summary:
  
  The engine has a significant malfunction in the VANOS system, as well as a deviation in timing/synchronisation between the crankshaft and camshaft. First, the timing chain timing and condition, as well as the operation of the exhaust-side VANOS solenoid valve, should be checked. In addition, the engine oil leaks and any possible coolant leak from the turbocharger should be inspected and repaired.
