Fiat's strong points originally included a front‑axle differential lock, a relatively "modern" cab, the fuel tank mounted on the cab's rear wall and an underside with small protections making it suitable for forestry.
Still a good 4WD tractor for many tasks and it has that 1980s feel.
Notes from the test drive.
Operating hours: 9950 h
Blows warm air into the cab; the heater has cold and hot settings. Fan has at least two speeds.
The engine started properly from −10 °C without pre‑heating; the glow plugs work.
Aftermarket turbo fitted, injection pump appears standard and injectors look normal. No intercooler!
—Doesn't emit heavy black smoke, no popping flame at the exhaust at full revs and full throttle; power has not reduced, though it hasn't noticeably increased either. Torque may be improved.
Headlights, indicators, main beams, work lights and glow operate. Battery looks recently replaced. Work lights light up; beacon powered via a cigarette‑lighter style socket.
Front tyres good, rear tyres ~50% with deep lugs.
Engine, gearbox and rear axle dry externally — no obvious leaks. Engine oil clear, gearbox oil present and hydraulic oil looks satisfactory.
Cab in reasonably good order, windows intact, both doors open and the rear window opens too. Driver and passenger seats acceptable.
Surface rust starting in several places, but the cab floor is still solid. Not among the worst rust cases.
Lift works; click‑clack switch functions. Original telescopic lift arms present; adjustable top link works.
Two hydraulic valve blocks fitted, both work and free return is available.
PTO engages and stops.
All gears are present; as typical the straight gear can squeal.
Clutch holds and releases.
4WD and differential locks engage and function.
Brakes OK, though not like new. Not tested with a trailer.
Testing was carried out based on traditional tractor driving experience; we recommend bidders inspect the vehicle in person.
On arrival to Avant the non‑working work lights were removed, a large bundle of dangerous unattended wires and power outlets were disconnected, the battery was secured, a new block‑heater resistor lead/Defa cable was installed, fluids were checked and a large number of new bulbs fitted to replace blown ones.
The tractor came from private use so the price does not include deductible VAT.
Defects noted on the test drive
Electrics are poor; many electrical issues noted and these models left the Italian factory with ad‑hoc solutions. Repair work recommended.
Surface rust in the cab on the wings, lower door edges and door frames.
Cab has been repainted at some point — good paint from a distance but not professional finish on close inspection.
Cab fittings need attention, some instrument lights are out and the radio is present but the previous owner didn't want to bother with speakers (no speakers fitted).
Recommend new feed and return oil lines for the turbo — they are weeping oil.
Engine and gearbox filters reported changed and oils clear — still a service is recommended!
Rear tyres show wear and chunking, probably original.
Rims have been painted, partially with poor preparation.
Front axle oil seals slightly damp, play in the oscillating bearing.
Top link (push rod) missing — previous users probably used trailers.
Roof hatch does not open; the beacon blocks access.
Injection pump is weeping, fuel hoses look old.
