Mercedes-Benz 400 SE, 1991, Turku

This is a Mercedes-Benz 400 SE (W140) from the first year of production, whose 4.2-litre engine produces 210 kW (286 hp) – in other words, the non-Eco model. This example was imported into Finland new for the use of the senior management of a construction company. Larger, roomier, wider and heavier than its predecessor (W126), yet extremely comfortable. Double-glazed side windows provide pleasant quietness. The suspension comfort, excellent seats, silence and the reassuring feel of a large car are probably among its best features. And as it is a historic vehicle, running costs are quite moderate.

With rear-wheel drive, the 400 SE is remarkably agile for its size. The drivetrain, engine and gearbox operate smoothly. Performance could be described as adequate. Fuel consumption is reasonable considering the car’s speed and size: 11–12 litres per 100 km when driven calmly. The tank holds 100 litres, so frequent visits to the petrol station are unnecessary. The automatic gearbox works in a refined manner (apparently this was not the case in its predecessor, the W126). Gear changes are smooth and free from jolts. The large V8 and the automatic gearbox that suits it so well, combined with the comfortable, quiet and stable ride of a large car, come into their own especially on motorways.

An unusual detail – even in the early 1990s, luxury cars did not have satellite navigation or parking sensors, let alone a camera. This car was fitted as standard with “antennas” (guide rods) that rise from the rear corners of the boot when reverse gear is selected. By watching them, the driver can estimate the rear extent of the car while reversing.
