Four-wheel-drive Passat with a clutch/mechatronics fault available for repair!

The car is roadworthy and has been in daily use until now, when this issue was found. The repair estimate from Vagen is high, so the car is being sold by auction for repair!

VAGEN's description of the fault and cost estimate:

We were able to carry out diagnostics on the car. Below are the findings and an attached cost estimate including clutch replacement if needed. The costs are €3,915 once the mechatronics unit has been replaced. After that, the condition of the clutch will be determined (whether it is still slipping and whether it has been damaged by the faulty mechatronics). The costs are €6,811 incl. mechatronics replacement, clutch and dual-mass flywheel replacement, and repair of the transfer case oil leak.

Fault description:
The gearbox clutch slips heavily when accelerating, i.e. the revs rise but the car does not accelerate.
The fault is especially noticeable in S mode, but also occurs in D.

Test drive carried out
- slight clutch slip observed
- pulling away is jerky
- reverse gear engages slowly

Inspected on a lift
- DSG oil is clean, no metal particles, no burnt/clutch smell
- oil in the mechatronics connector, but it has not yet spread further into the wiring harness

The pressure sensors in the mechatronics unit leak oil through to the control unit side, from where the oil rises into the connector.
This fault often also causes deviations in the pressure sensor readings, which in turn can cause clutch slip and slow engagement.

Other observations:
- transfer case is leaking a little oil

Repair plan:
- replace mechatronics (at present there is no durable repair solution available)
- check operation
- replace clutch if it has been damaged by slipping due to the faulty mechatronics
- reseal the transfer case during a possible clutch replacement
- inspect the dual-mass flywheel and replace if necessary during the clutch replacement (with these mileages, replacement is recommended anyway)
