Toyota Corolla, 2005, Vihti

For sale is a Corolla that is practically at the end of its life and in rather similar condition, intended primarily for spare parts/parts resale or even export to Africa. It can be repaired too, but be prepared to spend time and nerves if you take that route. A bit of background: the car ended up in a ditch twice last winter, and the second time it happened with the rear first on the motorway. The rear axle was bent (replaced with a new aftermarket axle), and the engine does not run properly. The front bumper fasteners were also damaged and there are dents in the underside, and the tow hitch socket is also bent. The idea was to restore this into a fully usable car, but after assessing the issues, the enthusiasm and time ran out. Another option would be to keep it and scrap it for the scrappage bonus, but a new car is unlikely to be bought, and storing this until next winter is a bit uncertain. It has now been stored in a warm garage since February.

Faults:

-The engine runs poorly. Fault code P0012 "A" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded, which after resetting has not returned, but the engine still runs badly. The camshaft position sensor has been replaced, which helped a little, but did not fully fix it. It idles badly and may stall; when pressing the accelerator it initially seems to choke, but the revs do rise. The revs also sometimes rise on their own. It also emits light smoke. The suspicion is a blown head gasket or something else, but there is a fairly high likelihood that the engine will need to be opened up for repair.

-Front bumper mounts broken, the bumper is now attached with a wire fix.

-Rear bumper damaged on the right and dented.

-Dents in the underside, photos of them can be seen

-Left mirror missing (there is a new one, but it is probably for a hatchback, so slightly the wrong model)

-Rust hole in the left sill

-On the left wheel arch/rear boot area the sheet metal seams have cracked; I do not know whether this affects use of the car

Pros:

-In storage, ordinary deregistration, so it can be put back on the road if desired by taking out traffic insurance and making a notification

-MOT valid until November

-Four sets of tyres. Two of these (summer and winter friction tyres) are on alloy wheels; one winter tyre is punctured. All included. The studded tyres fitted now are probably about 10 years old, the others are newer, with 2020-2022 date codes. The nuts for the alloy wheels are kept.

-Spare parts included (new black left front wing, new left mirror (slightly the wrong model, but may still be fitted), new side indicators, drop links, exhaust manifold gasket), possibly more too

-Parts removed from the car are kept (inner wheel arch liner, wipers, wiper trays, etc.)

-Otherwise a working car, electric windows on every door, air conditioning also seems to work and the radio plays something even though the aerial is broken

-Finnish car and original manuals etc. are retained

-Fuel tank over half full

-2 keys, I did not test the remote functions; at least on one of them the buttons have come off

-And, as mentioned, the new rear axle has been fitted

-The underside is surprisingly good, apart from dents from visits to the snowbank

The car is movable, but I would not take it into traffic, so collection is preferably on a trailer or similar. It can be driven onto a trailer, so a winch is not necessarily needed. Luckily the brakes seem to work and the handbrake holds. Strangely enough, this has never been rejected at inspection, but if you take it there in this condition, I guarantee it will not pass. There would probably be some entertainment value in that inspection..
