Mercedes-Benz 220, 1962, Pello

Here is an eye-catching, restored and very well‑preserved W111‑series Mercedes‑Benz 220 SEb from 1962 with low mileage. The car is museum‑registered, its history is documented and it has been restored twice over the years. The W111 Mercedes is regarded as the factory’s final model series with a still‑large proportion of hand assembly, and these cars have long been desirable classics and collector’s items.

The car was sold new in Uppsala, Sweden and registered in November 1962 to Anders Folke, who kept it for the first 20 years. The MB then changed owner for the first time and effectively became a hobby vehicle. Swedish inspection certificates from that period show a fairly low annual mileage. The Mercedes was first restored by J.E. Viklund, who owned the car in 1983–1992, in Sweden. The car arrived in Finland in 1992 via Viklund’s Finnish colleague. In Finland the MB was unused for the first 10 years and in 2002 it joined another enthusiast’s collection, who carried out a further restoration. The car’s current appearance and condition are largely thanks to the restoration begun in 2002; the museum inspection and registration were completed in May 2008.

After 1983 this Mercedes’s mileage has essentially been occasional hobby driving.

The engine is the original 2.2 L straight‑six (120 hp) fitted with a mechanical single‑point injection unit, rare for the era — so rare it is shown as a separate “Einspritzmotor” inscription on the rear. The engine runs and pulls smoothly, the drivetrain is quiet and the brakes work well. The sides are straight and the doors close like a safe. Of course, remember that despite the restorations the car is 64 years old.

The only faults that come to mind are:

Charging is weak when the lights are on. Sometimes it takes longer to start — would replacing the fuel filter help? Otherwise everything works and the ride is smooth.
