Ready to use, the freezing toilet needs no water connection, sewer or special ventilation. Just plug it into a socket. The oval 21-litre inner bucket fits a biodegradable bag that can be removed hygienically for composting.

Ekohytte Frost is designed with energy economy in mind. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make it extremely frugal. Ekohytte Frost consumes only 0.36 kWh per 24 hours — roughly half the consumption of comparable competing products. Thick base insulation and high adjustable feet mean the freezing toilet must be installed in a heated space.

Before first use

• After unpacking, check the product for damage. Contact the seller if you find any.

• Leave the unit standing upright for at least 30 minutes. Any oil that may have entered the coolant circuit during transport will flow back to the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Set them before use so the toilet stands securely and level.

• The seat is intended for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything non-compostable in it, e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
Place the toilet in a warm indoor space. It can be used on a heated floor thanks to the thick base insulation and high feet. Heat will increase power consumption, so we do not recommend placing it directly next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Position the unit level and secure it using the adjustable feet.

Use

• Push the bottom of the bio-bag into the bucket and turn the top edges over the bucket so the bucket can be dropped into the toilet seat.

• Ensure the bucket handle is inside so the seat and lid close correctly.

• Plug into the socket and switch the unit on; the green indicator will light.

• Wait about one hour before first use.

Emptying

• When the bucket is about two-thirds full, replace the bio-bag.

• Tuck the top edges of the bag into the bucket and lift the bucket out of the seat.

• Compost the waste in a domestic or garden composter, after adding plenty of dry cover material beforehand.

• Break the surface of the bag, e.g. with a garden fork, and cover with a layer of dry material.

• Check for ice around the bucket rim. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

• Install a new bag.

Use of cover material
No cover material is needed in the freezing toilet. Cover should only be used in subsequent composting.

Cleaning
Clean the Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use household general-purpose cleaners. The bucket can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry it before returning it to place. Do not use water on the rear cooling chamber wall. Clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods out of use

• Disconnect the unit from the mains.

• Empty, clean and dry the bucket and cooling chamber.

• Leave the lid open.

• The unit may be stored in an unheated space.
