Mercedes-Benz E, 2004, Laukaa

Testing for sale: a reasonably tidy and fairly well maintained Mercedes — I'm looking to upgrade to a newer car myself.

Plusses to start with:

- BC Racing height/stiffness adjustable coilover set that performs well

- Drives well; wheels aligned last summer

- Two sets of tyres: summer tyres driven a maximum of 1,000 km, winter tyres have worn studs

- Well maintained (full service book and a bundle of receipts in the glovebox)

- Auxiliary light neatly mounted behind the grille

- Fairly tidy interior (small repaired tear on the driver’s seat)

- Relatively little rust

Items fitted during my ownership:

- Stub axles, hubs and bearings

- Thermostat

- Driveshaft support bearing

- Injector seats cleaned/serviced; new seals and bolts fitted

- Glow relay

- Starter motor

- Almost all front control arms, except the upper wishbones

- All brakes serviced (sliding pins, pads, discs, handbrake cables)

- Oils and filters changed roughly every 10,000 km

- ABS rings and sensors

- New batteries

And the minuses so it’s not all praise:

- Makes a strange squeal at a certain temperature; it’s been like this for about two years, unchanged and doesn’t affect operation

- Knocking from the front, likely the anti-roll bar (bushes loose; track/dog-bone arms were renewed)

- Rear arches repaired a bit haphazardly but only noticeable up close

- No major aftermarket extras beyond usual factory options (has cruise control, electric seats etc.)

- A few stone chips in the windscreen but hasn’t affected the MOT

- Shows a fault warning for brake pads because the wear sensors are not connected

Those are the main points that came to mind quickly.
