Kawasaki Z 1000 J, 1981, 18,200 km, Kempele

Worth bidding on, reserve is modest.

I have owned this Kawasaki since 2019. The bike has not been rebuilt to stock (though not heavily modified either), so you won’t see another exactly like it.

Work carried out during this time: fork inner tubes replaced, new seals and oil, steering head bearings renewed.

Exhausts fitted are Sito 4/4 (used) and there is no centre stand because of this. The steering bearing assembly has also been serviced.

The instrument cluster is not original to this exact model but from a Kawasaki of the same era, so the true mileage is unknown.

Indicators are from a newer Z1000 model, rear light is a darker version. All brake rubbers (master cylinders and wheel cylinders) replaced, brake fluids renewed, brake pads front and rear replaced, calipers painted. One side cover replaced, Z1000 badges on the side panels are new and all mounting rubbers replaced.

Engine vibration mounts replaced. Front and rear wheel bearings renewed. Ignition coil replaced, plug leads refitted, valve clearances checked and valve stem seals renewed, engine painted with USA Engine VHT and the cylinder assembly with Barrel VHT.

All handlebar switches stripped and serviced. Carburettor seals, diaphragm sets and jets replaced; carburettors ultrasonic‑cleaned and synced. All engine seals and gaskets changed, clutch plates renewed. All timing‑chain guides and the tensioner replaced. Alternator cover grommet and wiring renewed, wiring loom serviced and some connectors replaced. Tank side mounting rubbers renewed.

Seat rear hoop sourced used after a long search; the marks came with it, but it is Kawasaki original.

Rear wheel is 406 mm (16") (LTD) to allow a slightly wider tyre (fits directly); the original 457 mm (18") rear sprocket is included. Rear mudguard slightly modified and fitted with a stainless steel plate bracket and mudflap — done with street credibility in mind. Some details may have been omitted.

Original exhaust headers included if wanted. Small dent on the upper left of the tank. Some work left for the next owner: after winter it may need coaxing to start and the carburettors could be adjusted once more. Seat lock does not work.

I ride it annually approx. 500–1,500 km. I’ve owned several bikes and after this sale I will keep only one. Not enough time or space, and age isn’t helping. A few photos are from last year’s road use; the rest are recent.

This is not cosmetically flawless, but is said to look great on the road — not built for a museum. Remember it is a 45‑year‑old machine, but it has been worked on with a good attitude; time and money have been spent, as hobbyists know. I may regret selling it later.

Powerful engine 75 kW / 102 hp, won’t be left behind and very pleasant to ride.

I restored the original plate number — it had been changed over time (original XT‑331). At one point it was removed from the register on 21 September 2009 and the original plate was awaited when it was re‑registered.
