  • The FZR1000 model was widely regarded at the time as the best mass-produced sports motorcycle in the world. In its 1989 FZR1000R version the engine produced over 140 hp and it offered class-leading handling. The FZR1000R won bike of the year awards in the motorcycle press [1] and Cycle World crowned it the "bike of the decade". The machine was continuously updated throughout its life cycle and continued to collect awards into the early 1990s.

    FZR1000 was a natural evolution of Yamaha’s Genesis design concept, pioneered on the Yamaha FZ750. The most significant update was a new aluminium twin-spar frame marketed as the 'Deltabox'. The frame was still technically in its early stages, and while aluminium Deltabox frames had already been used in racing, this was their first use on a production road bike of this size. [3] A new wheel design with lightweight hollow spokes was also fitted, wide enough for the latest radial tyres.

    The FZ1000 features a five-speed sequential close-ratio gearbox. The clutch is wet, multi-plate and hydraulically operated. Final drive is via an O-ring chain and sprockets.
