Please read the listing carefully so you, as the buyer, know as much as I do as the seller.

FOR SALE AS NEEDING REPAIR. Drivable and just passed inspection with no remarks — a lively and very well-handling 2.5 TDI automatic A6. Relatively presentable for its age; the front wheel arches have been repaired at some point.

THE GEARBOX IS ACTING UP. It is very likely that the gearbox contains the wrong type of oil. Before inspection it stood parked for about five years. The previous owner tinkered with some repairs and during that work the gearbox oil was changed, which according to hearsay may be the wrong type. The symptoms began just after it was taken out of storage.

The symptom appears as a "jerk" when engaging a gear, or when slowing down as the gearbox downshifts. Gear changes are inconsistent: sometimes it shifts up a bit too often, sometimes it slips down to a lower gear and back up. It does not always engage the highest gear; switching the engine off for about half a minute and restarting has sometimes helped. It is possible the issue would be resolved by changing only the oil and filter. I give no guarantee for this, but it is quite possible. I have not investigated further.

I just drove a 300 km run; otherwise the car is fully drivable. You can drive it to move it, at your own risk. During that run the symptoms did not change or worsen. It runs slightly better when warm.

IN SHORT: The car is drivable, but I am selling it with a gearbox fault, although the fault may be only the oil. This gearbox type apparently is very particular about its oil.

On the instrument cluster the coolant temperature gauge, oil temperature gauge and voltmeter do not work. The trip computer display has pixel faults.

• Really good to drive.

• Engine in excellent condition; no mixing of fluids and no unusual noises. Runs smoothly, service history retained.

• Includes good studded tyres suitable for the wheels below; currently studded tyres are fitted to the wheels.

• Engine oil + filter, fuel filter, brake master cylinder and wiper blades changed under 5,000 km ago.

• Timing system overhaul reportedly about 30,000 km ago. Looking under the cover the timing belt appears in good condition.

• Underside very good.

For someone who understands this issue, a very good car for many more years!
