Toyota Hiace, 1985, Kuusamo

Due to lack of time, one of the hobby vehicles is being offered for sale. For its age, it is still in fairly decent condition, even though the first owner (1985-2011) was a reindeer herder - there’s no smell of urine here, and there is still metal under the floor plywood.

The body was fully welded once in winter 2018 and repainted that spring with Normadur 65 in RAL9007. This was a so-called revival; no attempt was made to make it perfect, and not all of the old dents were straightened out. Age and use are however visible in the form of newer stone chips, and rust is also coming through in places. The underside is in fairly solid condition, although rust protection was not carried out back then.

At the time of the bodywork, facelift square headlights, grille and surrounds etc. were fitted. The instrument cluster was also changed to a rev-counter model; actual mileage for the body is +425,000 km.

In summer 2021 the engine was swapped for a ’91 Hilux unit and modified for inspection with a turbo added. When this thing gets going, it really pulls on long motorway overtakes. Despite a slightly heavy right foot, fuel consumption has been just under 10 l/100 km. The boost piping is a temporary bodge and could be done better.

The engine swap also brought a new clutch kit and power steering.

During my ownership it has been serviced as needed; not recorded are the front brake discs + pads changed in spring -25 and the timing belt in September -25, when the correct injection pump was finally found. A new windscreen was fitted in spring -24.

The engine seeps a little oil, the washer fluid reservoir leaks, and the horn did not work with the sporty steering wheel shown in the pictures. The axle also has the traditional howl at cruising speed.

The original optional special wheels with 205R14 tyres should be good for several more summers of local driving. The original steel wheels are also included, fitted with unusable studded tyres.

The cab doors have remote central locking. And there’s a stereo too. Plenty of treats here.

Just inspected with no remarks, so now there are two years of driving time.
