The owner turned 90 at the end of 2025 and the licence was no longer renewed.

The C20NE is one of the most successful petrol engines of the 1980s and 1990s. Not because it had lots of fancy technology, but quite the opposite: the technology was modern enough, but very simple.

The main reasons for its durability:

* Cast-iron block. It withstands wear very well, and cylinder wear does not easily develop. Over 500,000 km is not an exceptional mileage, and with good maintenance many have run over 700,000 km.

* Eight valves (SOHC). One camshaft and two valves per cylinder mean fewer moving parts than in 16-valve engines.

* No turbo. The absence of a turbo reduces thermal load and removes one expensive potential failure point.

* The timing belt is easy to replace. Note! Even if it breaks, it does not cause damage.

* Bosch Motronic injection. The system was very reliable in its day. There were few sensors, and it did not have the complex emissions systems of modern cars.

* No EGR, particulate filter or direct injection. These are typical failure points in many new engines, but the C20NE does not have them.

* The engine is “understressed”. About 115 hp from two litres does not push the engine anywhere near its structural limits.

I looked at the prices of European oldtimers, and this one is practically free...
