The bike is in tidy condition for its age and, above all, excellent to ride — this is BMW at its best: stable, hugely torquey and comfortable even on long trips.

The bike's rear, which is a known model fault, was rebuilt last autumn by professionals at EMC Oy at an odometer reading of 88,033 km. An expensive and important repair has therefore been done, so the buyer need not worry.

• The clutch basket springs are loose. A typical K-series trait. Causes a small rattling/noise at idle. Does not affect riding or clutch operation in any way.

• Second gear: Under hard, full-throttle acceleration it may “jump”. The symptom suggests wear on the second gear teeth. In normal riding and in brisk acceleration it works completely normally.

Otherwise the bike runs, accelerates and brakes as it should. There is immense torque and the ESA suspension makes riding comfortable.

So, if you are looking for a show bike, this is not it. If you want an honest, rideable and well-equipped K1200S that has had the costly rear overhaul and is a pleasure on long rides, this is a very good candidate.
