Ion production requires an ioniser component inside the unit. Ozone plates do not produce ions.

If the unit you buy is claimed to produce negative ions, check that it contains the ion-producing component shown in the last picture.

ABOUT IONISATION:
Negative ions produced into indoor air cause light, positively charged airborne particles to bind together, forming larger and heavier particles that fall quickly out of the breathing zone.

Negative ionisation also breaks down volatile organic compounds in the air, which are harmful when inhaled. Toxic compounds produced by microbes (microbial toxins), when aerosolised into indoor air, pose a significant health risk if they reach the lungs and bloodstream. Heavy microbial toxins that do not mix into the air cause harm mainly via spores, which are the producers of these dangerous toxins.

The effectiveness of ozone (O3) and negative ionisation relies on high concentrations.

When a device produces negative ions in addition to ozone, its effectiveness is 5–10 times better than ozone alone and high concentrations remove spores and odours effectively even from porous materials, such as upholstery and bedding.

Fine particles in indoor air pose a serious health risk in homes and workplaces.

Harmful fine particles travel via breathing to the deep lung (alveoli) and into the bloodstream causing serious health problems in addition to asthma and allergies.

    Ozonation and negative ionisation work especially effectively in a positively pressurised building.

    Ozone and negative ionisation together create compounds that effectively remove microbial spores and various odours, for example sewer gases, smoke smells, bacterial and mould toxin odours, and stubborn cooking and tobacco odours.

    Ozone and negative ionisation also remove fine particles and MVOC and VOC compounds.

Indoor ozonation cannot be carried out while people are present because ozone is produced massively to destroy microbial spores.
