Ion production requires an ioniser unit inside the machine. Ozone plates do not produce ions.

ABOUT IONISATION:
Negative ions produced into indoor air attach to light, positively charged airborne particles, causing the formed larger, heavier particles to fall quickly out of the breathing zone.

Negative ionisation also breaks down volatile organic compounds in the air that are harmful when inhaled. Toxic compounds produced by various microbes, which mix into indoor air as aerosols (= microbial toxins), pose a significant health risk when they reach the lungs and bloodstream. Heavier microbial toxins that do not mix into indoor air cause harm mainly via spores, which are the producers of these dangerous toxins.

The effectiveness of ozone (O3) and negative ionisation depends on achieving high concentrations.

When a device produces negative ions in addition to ozone, its effectiveness compared with ozone alone is 5–10 times better, and high concentrations remove spores and odours effectively even from porous materials, such as upholstered furniture and bed linen.

Fine particles in indoor air present a serious health risk in homes and workplaces.

Harmful fine particles travel with inhaled air into the deep lungs (alveoli) and from there into the bloodstream, causing serious health problems in addition to asthma and allergies.
