A torque wrench is a precision instrument for setting tightening torque. It is designed to tighten threaded fastenings so that the applied force is known and matched to the strength of the materials and the bolt and nut. The torque wrench is especially suitable for vehicle work and other situations where the manufacturer specifies the required tightening torque.

The wrench uses a mechanical click mechanism that gives an audible "click" when the set torque is reached. The torque scale is in the handle and adjustment is made by turning the handle. Once the required torque is set, the wrench is locked with a safety catch at the end of the handle.
