Lexus LS, 1997, Jyväskylä

Toyota wanted in the 1980s to enter the luxury car markets in Europe and especially the United States. The problem was that in the US the name Toyota meant a reliable, inexpensive people’s car, so something entirely new had to be created. In 1989 a brand-new marque, Lexus, was launched with the LS400 as its flagship, which was a direct competitor to Mercedes’ S‑class. This example represents the second generation, updated in 1995.

Although the car will be 30 years old next year, it still has a lot of life left. Kept largely in original condition apart from the wheels and the towbar. The current summer wheels are from a 1998 LS400 and fitted with brand-new Michelin Primacy 5 tyres, among the best available in the original tyre size. The winter wheels have reasonably good studs — see the last exterior picture. The previous owner ran 20‑inch summer wheels and had them inspection‑approved; I didn’t like them, but they can be included if wanted. Unfortunately the original wheels for this car are not available.

Imported new into Finland and, as far as I know, I am the car’s third private owner; the first owned it for 21 years. Rust‑proofed from new. The previous owner serviced the car himself and kept notes on his service slips (the slips shown in the pictures are in Swedish).

I bought the car in November 2025, so I have owned it for just over half a year. During that time it has been extensively serviced to make it the perfect summer car for me, but life circumstances and dreams don’t quite match. Although the mileage is high by Finnish standards, the car is in very good condition and has genuinely been well looked after — few come close. Just passed inspection with praise and can be registered as a museum (historic) vehicle in 2028 if desired.

• 368,558 km Timing belt kit + water pump + multi‑rib belt + valve‑cover seals + spark plugs + thermostat

• 368,662 km Oil and filter

• 369,207 km Left lower ball joint

• 372,162 km Steering rack + left brake backing plate (steering rack replaced due to a leak)

• Brand‑new summer tyres purchased in May

• Brake fluid will be changed on 1 July as it is quite old

The boot also contains spare parts/supplies for future maintenance!
