Notes from the test drive: The car starts nicely. No vague noises when stationary or on the road. The revs fluctuate slightly at idle, around 800–1,100 rpm. When accelerating from low revs the engine stutters a little at the same rev range. Otherwise it runs and accelerates very cleanly. Fault codes were read at a garage; a code from the ignition coil of cylinder 2 was thrown (last picture). The garage suspected this could be solved by replacing the spark plug(s). Not repaired by us. Aside from the above issue, the car is in great condition for its age. Recently taken in from daily use.

• Two sets of tyres + alloy wheels – practicality and a bit of style. Both sets are roadworthy.

• Electric windows, electric mirrors, remote central locking – small comforts you learn to appreciate when they’re missing.

Swedes built the Saab in a country where winter lasts half the year, roads are sometimes more suggestions than surfaces and comfort is a survival tool rather than a luxury. Saab also has an aviation background – and while this won’t take off, the driver-focused design is still evident.
