All-wheel drive and gearbox work; gearbox can feel a little notchy at times. Engine and gearbox are not remapped.


Some maintenance records are in the electronic service book, some are nowhere to be found and I have no information about the car's history before my ownership.

Oils changed approx. 5,000 km ago; gearbox and transfer case oils changed the year before last at Öljyset.

No information on front and rear differential oils. Transfer case oil was quite black so assume they are original.

Oil sump gasket replaced last summer, oil filter housing gaskets replaced the year before last and intake ports shot-blasted.


Generally a fairly reliable car but an old BMW is an old BMW — if you want a bit of excitement wondering what’s next, this will provide it.

Summer and winter tyres included: summer tyres are a couple of summers old RoadMX Chinese tyres and winters are Nokian Hakkapeliitta.

Defects and other observations

The engine warning light comes on after driving for a while, fault codes;

Clearing the fault codes makes them go away for a while but they will return sooner or later. Hardly affects drivability except that it disables the lean-burn mode and increases fuel consumption.

Basic cruise control works without the adaptive function; radar adjustment should be possible with importer tools or by trial and error to aim the sensors. I haven't been interested in investigating.

Small vibration when accelerating at low speeds and at about 60 km/h — if I had to guess, driveshaft (propshaft), but it hasn't been investigated further. Roughly the same for the three years I've owned the car.

Brakes were renewed a couple of summers ago but still vibrate when braking despite being new.

Under-engine plastic covers have come loose over the years.


Navigation is DVD-based and likely does not work.
