We at Hyvän Kaupan Paikka are feeling playful, so after one meeting we decided to stand a barrel sauna on end. That produced the Upright barrel sauna — a quirky sauna that still delivers proper steam, as it is a fully functioning sauna despite its novelty.

The Upright barrel sauna is a bit like the deodorant of saunas: it fits into almost any gap in a yard or even on an apartment block courtyard. And you won’t need deodorant anyway — you’ll be sweating in the sauna. With a diameter of just 2.1 m, the only problem is choosing from many possible locations. You can of course order several across your yard, but start with one to get a very compact yet functional sauna for a small space. Order an Upright barrel sauna and change the way you sauna!

Sauna for tricky locations

Barrel saunas are lightweight and can be moved even after the first steam sessions. The secret of a barrel sauna built on a sturdy gravel base is the support feet under the barrel that keep the sauna off the ground and allow easy relocation. The lack of heavy, fixed foundations makes siting easier, and many use a barrel sauna as a beach sauna since you can’t build a permanent foundation too close to the shoreline. You can of course place your sauna on a terrace or pour a concrete base, but placement is largely down to imagination. Still, check the base with a spirit level so the sauna stands straight — you don’t want to move it while in use.

The barrel sauna can be moved with a forklift or the lifting gear of a tractor using slings. A sauna moved to the beach for the summer can be moved closer to the cottage or house for winter with a neighbour farmer’s help.

In the Upright barrel sauna you can sit or stand

The unfinished wooden sauna can be stained in your preferred colours. The spruce capsule fits 4–6 bathers, who can choose to sit on sturdy pine benches or enjoy the high ceiling by standing. The Harvia M3 stove provides gentle heat and the fire’s cheerful play is visible through the glass hatch, casting light on the sauna walls. Small windows and the door window bring light into the Upright barrel sauna. One window can be opened.

Waste water under control

As an accessory, the Sauna‑Seppo wash‑water filter removes waste‑water worries: water run through the filter can be released back into nature without environmental fines from building control.

Almost shoulder‑carried delivery

We are happy to deliver the complete kit to your home and you don’t need lifting equipment if you choose delivery by hiab truck. The sauna only weighs about 800 kg, so you could collect it with your own trailer if your vehicle’s towing capacity is sufficient. You could almost sling it over your shoulder and carry it home — almost. A trailer is recommended.

The delivery includes everything essential, roofing felt included. We can also provide architect drawings for building authorities if needed, but nowadays this size of sauna should usually be possible without a formal building permit. Foundation work is the customer’s responsibility. The kit comes with illustrated instructions and you can request building permit drawings beforehand, so when the delivery arrives you can start assembling your new fun yard sauna straight away. You will need a drill, screwdriver, hammer, saw, tape measure, pencil and patient enthusiasm. Always read the instructions carefully before starting each work step.
