Ready to use immediately, the freezing toilet needs no water connection, sewer or extra ventilation. Just plug it into a mains socket. Ekohytte Frost has been engineered for energy economy. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make it extremely frugal. Ekohytte Frost consumes only 0.36 kWh per 24 h — roughly half that of comparable competitors. Thick base insulation and high adjustable feet mean the freezing toilet must be installed in a heated space.

Before first use

• After removing the product from its packaging, check for damage. Contact the seller if you find any.

• Leave the unit upright for at least 30 minutes. Any oil that flowed into the pipe during transport will then return to the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Set them before use so the toilet stands firmly and level.

• The seat is intended for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything non-compostable in it, e.g. rubbish, pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
The toilet must be placed in a heated indoor space. It can be used on underfloor heating because of its thick base insulation and high feet. Heat increases power consumption, so do not place it next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Position the toilet level and secure it using the feet.

Use

• Press the bio-bag base into the container and fold the bag edges over the top so the container can be lowered into the seat.

• Make sure the bucket handle is inside so the seat ring and lid close correctly.

• Plug into the wall and switch on at the unit so the green indicator lights.

• Wait about one hour before first use.

Emptying

• When the bucket is about two-thirds full, replace the bio-bag.

• Fold the top edges of the bio-bag into the container and lift the bucket out of the seat.

• Compost the waste in a household or garden composter to which you have added plenty of bulking material before emptying.

• Pierce the bag surface (e.g. with a fork) and cover with a layer of bulking material.

• Check for ice on the bucket rim. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

• Fit a new bag.

Use of bulking material
No bulking material is needed in the freezing toilet. Bulking material is required only for post-composting.

Cleaning
Clean Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use common household cleaners. The container can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry it before refitting. Do not use water on the rear cooling compartment; vacuum it once a year.

Longer periods of non-use

• Unplug the unit.

• Empty, clean and dry the container and cooling compartment.

• Leave the lid open.

• The unit may be stored in an unheated space.
