BMW X6, 2009, Raisio

During the test drive we made the following observations:

- On closer inspection it appeared the car's right front corner/front end has been in a collision and repaired roughly.

- Subframe underplate bent.

- The right front wheel sits clearly further back than the left. The right driveshaft contacts the shock absorber lower arm when turning.

- The right longitudinal control arm mounting ears have been stretched from the subframe. Further back on the subframe the underbody support bar has been angle-grinded through and rejoined only with screws and washers.

- The steering knuckle appears bent inwards. The right front brake seems warped when rotating. We did not have time to measure the wheel hub but it is likely bent.

- While inspecting the subframe a new front driveshaft was noticed. This appears to be far too short for the fitment and the rear splines may be damaged (possibly due to the transfer case); this cannot be checked without dismantling. It is possible that only the driveshaft is needed, but this will be confirmed by dismantling.

- We also investigated rough running and a petrol smell at idle. The running fault was very mild at the time so we could not determine the cause. It was noted that the rail pressures in both banks drop fairly quickly (possible injector leak). Worse in bank 2.

- During the underbody inspection it was also noted that the engine shows significant oil leakage. This was not clearly present at the time of service; it may have been cleaned. The leak is possibly at least between the upper oil pan joints but is not clearly visible. Replacing the oil pan seal requires removal of the subframe. There may be other leaks.

Based on the above, the car would need at minimum the following:

- Right front suspension including hub and steering knuckle.

- Subframe and reinforcement plate.

- Front driveshaft.

When replacing these parts it would be advisable to repair the oil leak i.e. replace the upper oil pan gasket, as this requires removal of the subframe.
