Here is a lively all-wheel-drive V6 Passat.


The car is in reasonable condition for its age.

There is rust bubbling on the wheel arch, and more at the lower edge of the passenger door.

Faults:

The car requests service and the engine warning lamp lights up occasionally.

One xenon headlight bulb is blown, which also triggers a fault light.


The gearbox often jolts when cold as a gear engages, but works completely normally when warm. The gearbox does not grind or hesitate when changing.
Occasionally when cold it reports a problem with the electric handbrake even though the brake is not engaged. This may then put the transmission into neutral.

These problems have occurred only after the car has stood overnight in freezing temperatures. Once the car is warmed up the issues disappear.

The idle fluctuates slightly, otherwise the engine is fine.


I took the car to a workshop and received these assessments of the problems:

idle - a hole was found in the crankcase breather hose and the air leak causes the issue

handbrake - the battery is poor and causes spurious error messages, especially when cold; the car thinks the handbrake is on and may put the transmission in neutral

gearbox jolt - gearbox oil and filter should be replaced; the cold causes jolting when a gear engages because the oils are old.
