Workshop diagnosis:


The timing chain between the camshafts has apparently jumped or broken. The workshop only removed the valve cover. They replaced the oil‑pressure sensor and engine oil + filter while investigating the oil‑pressure fault. Oil pressure was also measured and was normal, but after the oil change, when warming up in the yard the running began to worsen, the running sound changed and the engine stalled before it could be driven back into the workshop. Compression in every cylinder is 0 and one camshaft does not rotate at all. This is not something they have encountered before on Golfs of this age; on older models they have often encountered broken cam belts and chains.


The matter has been left at this and not investigated further.

On a short test drive we made the following observations

  • The timing chain between the camshafts has apparently jumped or broken. The workshop only removed the valve cover. They replaced the oil‑pressure sensor and engine oil + filter while investigating the oil‑pressure fault. Oil pressure was measured and was normal, but after the oil change, when warming up in the yard the running deteriorated, the running sound changed and the engine stalled before it could be driven back to the workshop. Compression in all cylinders is 0 and one camshaft does not rotate at all. This is not something they have encountered before on Golfs of this age; in older models they have often encountered broken cam belts and chains.



The car has not been subject to a technical inspection by us and not all equipment has been tested. There may be latent defects that we did not detect during the test drive.
