Ready to use straight away, the freezing toilet requires no water connection, sewage or extra ventilation. Simply plug it into a socket. The oval 21-litre inner container fits a biodegradable bag that can be removed hygienically for composting.

Outstanding energy efficiency
Ekohytte Frost has been engineered with a focus on energy economy. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make the unit extremely energy-efficient. Ekohytte Frost consumes only 0.36 kWh per day — about half the consumption of comparable products. The thick base insulation and tall adjustable feet allow installation on underfloor-heated floors; however, the freezing toilet must be placed in a heated room.

Before first use

• After removing the product from its packaging, check for any damage. Contact the seller if you find any damage.

• Leave the unit upright for at least half an hour. Any oil that may have entered the refrigerant circuit during transport will then return to the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Adjust them before use so that the toilet is stable and level.

• The seat is intended for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything that will not compost in it, e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
The toilet must be placed in a warm indoor space. It can be used on underfloor-heated floors thanks to the thick base insulation and tall feet. Heat increases power consumption, so we do not recommend placing it immediately next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Place the toilet level and secure it using the feet.

Use

• Push the biodegradable bag to the bottom of the inner container and fold its edges over the container so it can be lowered into the toilet

• Check that the container handle is inside so the seat and lid close properly

• Plug into the socket and switch the unit on; the green indicator will light

• Wait about one hour before first use

Emptying

• Change the biodegradable bag when the container is about two-thirds full

• Fold the top edges of the bag into the container and lift the container out of the seat

• Compost the contents in a household or garden compost bin to which you have already added a generous layer of dry material

• Break the surface of the bag, e.g. with a garden fork, and cover with a layer of dry material

• Check whether ice has formed around the edges of the cooling compartment. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

• Fit a new bag into place

Use of dry material
Dry material (bulking agent) is not needed in the freezing toilet. Add dry material only during secondary composting.

Cleaning
Clean Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use common household cleaning agents. The inner container can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry it before refitting. Do not use water on the rear cooling compartment; clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods out of use

• Unplug the unit

• Empty, clean and dry the container and cooling compartment

• Leave the lid open

• The unit can be stored in an unheated space
