Ready to use straight away, the freezing toilet needs no water connection, sewer or extra ventilation. Just plug it into a socket. The oval 21‑litre inner container fits a biodegradable bag which can be removed hygienically for composting.

Outstanding energy efficiency
Ekohytte Frost has been designed with energy economy in mind. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make it extremely energy-efficient. Ekohytte Frost uses only 0.36 kWh per 24 hours — about half the consumption of comparable competing products. The thick base insulation and high adjustable feet mean the freezing WC should be installed in a heated space.

Before use

• After removing the product from its packaging, check for damage. Contact the seller if you notice any damage.

• Leave the unit upright for at least half an hour. Any oil that may have moved into the tubing during transport will then flow back into the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Set them before use so the WC sits securely and level.

• The seat is for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything that does not compost (e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash, cigarette butts) into it.

Placement
The WC should be placed in a warm indoor space. It can be used on a heated floor because of its thick base insulation and tall feet. Heat increases power consumption, so we do not recommend placing it directly next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Place the seat level and secure it using the feet.

Use

• Press the bottom of the biodegradable bag into the inner container and fold the bag edge over the top of the container so the container can be placed into the toilet seat

• Ensure the bucket handle is inside so the seat ring and lid close properly

• Plug into the wall and switch the unit on so the green indicator lights

• Wait about one hour before first use

Emptying

• When the bucket is about two-thirds full, the biodegradable bag should be replaced

• Fold the top edges of the bag into the container and lift the container out of the seat

• Compost the waste in a household or garden composter to which you have added a generous amount of dry material before emptying

• Roughen the bag surface (e.g. with a garden fork) and cover with a layer of dry material

• Check for ice build-up around the edges of the container well. Thaw and dry the walls if necessary.

Use of absorbents
No absorbents are required in a freezing toilet. Absorbents are only needed for post-composting.

Cleaning
Clean the Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use common household cleaners. The inner container can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry before replacing. Do not use water to clean the rear cooling well. Clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods of non-use

• Unplug the unit

• Empty, clean and dry the inner container and the cooling well

• Leave the lid open

• The unit can be stored in an unheated space
