Ready to use straight away, the freezing toilet needs no water connection, drain or extra ventilation. Just plug it into a socket. The oval 21-litre inner bucket fits a biodegradable bag that can be removed hygienically for composting.

The Ekohytte Frost freezing toilet has been designed with energy economy in mind. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make it extremely energy-efficient. Ekohytte Frost uses only 0.36 kWh per day — about half the consumption of comparable competing models. The thick base insulation and high adjustable feet mean the freezing WC should be installed in a heated indoor space.

Before use

• After removing the product from its packaging, check for damage. Contact the seller if you find any damage.

• Keep the unit upright for at least half an hour. Any oil that may have flowed into the pipe during transport will then return to the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Set them before use so the toilet stands firmly and level.

• The toilet is intended for compostable waste, including toilet paper. Do not put anything non-compostable in it, e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
The WC should be placed in a warm indoor space. It can be used in rooms with underfloor heating thanks to the thick base insulation and high feet. Heat will increase the unit's power consumption, so we do not recommend placing it immediately next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. The toilet should be placed level and secured using its feet.

Use

• Push the base of the biodegradable bag into the bottom of the bucket and fold the bag rim over the top of the bucket so it can be lowered into the toilet seat.

• Check that the bucket handle is inside so the seat ring and lid close properly.

• Plug the unit into the wall and switch it on; the green indicator light will illuminate.

• Wait about one hour before use.

Emptying

• Change the bag when the bucket is about two-thirds full.

• Fold the top edge of the bag back into the bucket and lift the bucket out of the seat.

• Compost the waste in a household or garden compost bin to which you have added plenty of cover material before emptying.

• Pierce the bag surface (for example with a garden fork) and cover with a layer of cover material.

• Check for ice around the edges of the freezer basin. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

• Insert a new bag.

Use of cover material
No cover material is required in the freezing toilet. Cover material should only be added during secondary composting.

Cleaning
Clean the Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use standard household cleaning agents. The bucket can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry it before putting it back. Do not use water to clean the rear cold compartment/wall. Clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods of non-use

• Unplug the unit

• Empty, clean and dry the bucket and freezer well

• Leave the lid open

• The unit can be stored in an unheated space
