Ready-to-use freezing toilet needs no water connection, drain or ventilation work. You only need a mains socket. The Ekohytte Frost has been engineered with energy economy in mind. Optimised compressor technology and extra-thick insulation make it very energy-efficient. Ekohytte Frost consumes only 0.36 kWh/day — about half the consumption of comparable competing products. The thick base insulation and high adjustable feet mean the freezing toilet must be installed in a heated room.

Before use

• After removing the product from the packaging, check for damage. Contact the seller if you find any damage.

• Leave the unit upright for at least half an hour. Any oil that may have flowed into the cooling circuit during transport will then return to the compressor.

• The unit has adjustable feet. Adjust them before use so the toilet sits firmly and level.

• The seat is intended for compostable waste including toilet paper. Do not put anything that does not compost there, e.g. rubbish, sanitary pads, chemicals, detergents, matches, ash or cigarette butts.

Placement
The toilet must be placed indoors in a warm room. It can be used on underfloor-heated floors due to the thick base insulation and high feet. Heat increases electricity consumption, so we do not recommend placing it immediately next to a radiator or other heat source. Optimal room temperature is +10 to +22 °C, maximum +30 °C. Place the toilet level and secure it using the adjustable feet.

Use

• Place the bio-bag into the bucket and fold its edges over the rim so the bucket can be dropped into the seat

• Check that the bucket handle is inside so the seat ring and lid close properly

• Plug into the wall and switch the unit on so the green indicator lights

• Wait about one hour before use

Emptying

• When the bucket is about 2/3 full, replace the bio-bag

• Fold the bag’s top edges into the bucket and lift the bucket out of the seat

• Compost the waste in a domestic or garden compost bin, adding plenty of bulking material before emptying

• Pierce the bag surface, e.g. with a fork, and cover with a layer of bulking material

• Check for ice around the bucket rim. Defrost if necessary and dry the walls.

Use of bulking material
No bulking material is needed for the freezing toilet itself. Bulking material is only required for subsequent composting.

Cleaning
Clean the Ekohytte by wiping with a damp cloth. You may use common household cleaners. The bucket can be removed from the seat and washed with water. Dry before returning it. Do not use water to clean the back wall. Clean it once a year by vacuuming.

Longer periods out of use

• Unplug the unit

• Empty, clean and dry the bucket and the cooling compartment

• Leave the lid open

• The unit may be stored in an unheated space
