A rarer “grandad” model from Tunturi is now available, making it easy to carry your shopping home from the store. This model also stands out at rallies among the surrounding Tunturis. This is a lightly ridden and well-preserved 1981 Tunturi Lähetti Automat.

As shown in the pictures, it still has the original shock absorbers, lights, chain guard and saddle. A speedometer was not fitted to Tunturi Lähetti models at the factory.

There is always something to tidy up on mopeds of this age, should you wish to do so.

The Lähetti had not been ridden for a long time and was stored in a warm garage. It started well on old petrol, but the fuel tap began leaking when opened after the long period of disuse. The clean tank has now been drained of petrol. Replacing the tap is an inexpensive and straightforward DIY repair. The engine runs and changes gear as it should, the brakes hold and the shock absorbers work. The light switch changes correctly, and the horn and engine cut-off work. The rear light did not work during testing, possibly due to a faulty bulb.

An entirely sound machine for a 45-year-old moped. The same engine fitted at the factory is still in the frame; the frame and engine numbers therefore match!

Usable Leijona tyres are fitted; they may even be the original factory-fitted tyres.

When new, the moped was delivered to Vantaa on 14 August 1981, from where the current owner collected it from an elderly gentleman nearly 15 years ago. This Tunturi has not been ridden hard by youngsters.

The moped is currently off the road for insurance purposes. It can be put back into road use if the winning bidder wishes, but this must be agreed when the buyer calls to arrange collection of the Tunturi. Collection during the week following the auction’s end, by 1 November 2026, after which storage costs €50 per started week!

Defects and other observations

After a long period of storage, the fuel tap began leaking when opened; the tap needs replacing (a new tap costs €9.90 from a shop).

The rear light did not work; faulty bulb? Not investigated.
