This gentleman’s estate has covered 330,000 km and is considerably tidier in bodywork than its mileage suggests. The paintwork has just been machine-polished, so it literally shines! The car visited a workshop, and here is the workshop’s direct diagnosis:

- The harmonic damper weight on the front-left shock absorber bolt has detached from its vulcanisation. --->

Must be replaced.

- The drive joints click at the front; on the left, grease has escaped between the protective boot, and on the right the boot has previously been replaced but the joint has slight play in the direction of rotation. --> Both drive joints must be replaced. --> the joint is not available separately, so the drive shafts must be replaced.

- Replacement of the front drive shafts was started. At the same time, the intermediate shaft bearing, located in the oil sump, was checked; it has been rotating and damaged the oil sump. ---> The oil sump and intermediate shaft bearing must be replaced.


On paper, the fault list sounds as if the car is about to explode, but reality is different. On a straight road, the suspension mainly produces a minor knocking sound, and when the steering wheel is turned fully and the accelerator is pressed, there is a slight crunching noise.

This is practically a lottery win for a grease monkey! The village’s top DIY mechanic could sort this out on a Saturday evening with a couple of installation refreshments, whistling along to Dingo’s “Autiotalo”. Or take it to your trusted mechanic, who will curse the German design department for a couple of hours but make this a great car again for the next 300,000 kilometres.

A skilled mechanic can turn this with little effort into a truly striking, superbly equipped and diamond-like four-wheel-drive estate.
