Volvo S40 2008 (1.8 petrol) – A Swedish classic and a legend of the “carefree chain engine”.

Back in the day, the workshop used to casually advertise that this 1.8-litre model would, thanks to its timing chain, deliver nothing but carefree miles ahead. Unfortunately, this particular example decided to take that claim as a fair challenge and prove that eternity is only a line drawn on water.

In theory, the chain was never supposed to need attention. In practice, the engine bay has descended into a deep meditative state and seems to suggest that the chain and the metal orchestra around it could use some intensive group therapy - or possibly a direct transplant.

Model year: 2008, 1.8 petrol

Condition: Body and interior are tidy, apart from visible dents and stone chips on the body. It does look streamlined with a racing stripe from post to post. Of course, the powerhouse is best left in its current very deep rest; attempts to wake it make it respond unsteadily with a clattering and rattling metal orchestra.

Driveability: Not roadworthy - towing or transport on a trailer is strongly recommended.
