Land Rover III, 1975, Nurmijärvi

The original king of off-roaders, a 1975 Land Rover 109” STW with a 2.25 petrol engine. This isn’t about street cred - this is the real thing! Suitable for a farm or hunting and fishing trips. The ride comfort in these is so good that I wouldn’t necessarily take the family on, for example, a European road trip.

The Land Rover came to us inspired by our son’s wilderness guide training, but after graduating he immediately moved abroad. So the vehicle ended up doing occasional moves around the edge of the field on the farm ... now that the vehicle has been inspected and is road legal again (note: 2-year inspection period for vehicles this old) I decided to put it up for sale. Their value doesn’t exactly fall, so it can be kept as an investment.

There is a lot to like about this Series III Land Rover, including the engine, which seems very good, as do the gearbox and the rest of the driveline. It should be mentioned separately that the rear axle is the more durable Salisbury axle - those in the know will know what I mean. When the Land Rover arrived with us, it had about 1 km too much wiring in the engine bay, which was trimmed down. At the same time, a new distributor with electronic ignition, a conventional coil, and a starter solenoid were fitted. The car was painted in military style before us, but it would also be easy to restore to original. The interior’s definite positives are the headlining and the padded trim along the edges, which are usually already gone in cars of this age. The chassis also appears to be in good condition, including the rear crossmember. So you can safely hitch a trailer to the tow bar (we have not connected the socket, so there is no information about trailer lights working).

Someone has fitted a more comfortable driver’s seat from another car, which is no bad thing if you intend to drive it. But in England you can get interior parts etc. at a reasonable price.

The biggest negatives (which do not really affect usability)

Some dashboard trim panels are missing from the left corner of the dashboard.

The rear door hinges sag, or the striker plate needs adjustment from the inside; pulling and lifting closes it well.

The spring for the front passenger door lock recently broke.

The gearbox four-wheel-drive selector spring is incorrect, so you have to lift it with one hand when changing from low range to road use. But the gearbox itself works very well.

There is work to do on the electrical system if you want to restore it to museum plates.

And the rubber grommets for the gearbox and handbrake pass-throughs have perished. Spare B-pillar window rails included.

Probably more as well, but it has been inspected and is ready to drive - a farm or hunter’s work tool.
