A ramp insert (also called a ramp nut or threaded insert) is a fastener installed in wood, plastic or other soft materials, with a coarse external thread and a metric internal thread. It creates a strong, wear-resistant metal thread in wood material. This allows bolts (such as M6 or M8) to be screwed in and out repeatedly without wearing out or stripping the wood thread itself. Ramp inserts are typically used in furniture assembly (for example when attaching bed or table legs) and in demanding repair work when an old screw hole has become loose.

Steps for installing a ramp insert

Pre-drilling: Drill a pilot hole in the material as recommended by the insert manufacturer. The hole is usually slightly larger than the insert body, but smaller than the external thread (for example, for an M6 insert the pilot hole is often around 8.5–10.5 mm depending on the material).

Threading/Insertion: Screw the ramp insert into the hole. The head of the insert usually has either a hex socket, a straight-slot head for a screwdriver, or it can be installed using a bolt and counter nut to ensure alignment.

Use: Once the insert is flush with, or slightly below, the surface, you can attach the desired part to it with a standard machine screw or bolt.
