Negative ions produced in indoor air contribute to the destruction of light, positively charged airborne particles by attaching to them, whereby the resulting larger and heavier molecule quickly settles to the ground, away from the breathing zone.

Negative ionisation also breaks down volatile organic compounds in the air, which are highly harmful when inhaled in indoor air.
